90 minutes west of Madrid lies a mountain range of granite boulders, Gredos. Here Garnacha and Albillo Real are standout varieties, opposites in their nature, but both capable of creating compelling reds and whites respectively.
While there is no official DO for Gredos due to its location straddling the provinces of Madrid, Castilla y Leon, and Castilla-La Mancha, in Daniel Ramos the region has a producer really excelling in expressing the terroir and championing the old ways of viticulture.
"The [Gredos] area is chiefly known for its astonishing old-vine Garnachas: pure and limpid, testifying to their altitude, aspect and soil type with remarkable fidelity." Andrew Jefford, Decanter, Sept 2014.
