Marc Josten's family previously sold their grapes to local co-ops, at which he worked as a winemaker. When he inherited control of the vineyards in 2011 he chose to realise the incredible individual charater and potential of the grapes. He owns vineyards in some of the classic sites in Mayschoss (Ahr Pinot Noir and Grauburgunder) and Leutesdorf (Mittelrhein Riesling).

The Schiefer range of wines represent varietal blends from across vineyard sites, but all charaterised by the slate soils, steep slopes, and cool climate viticulture along the Ahr river. He also produces village and single vineyard wines which demonstate real specificity of terroir, in much the same way as the approach in Burgundy.
