Grape Varieties Terrantez do Pico, Verdelho, and Arinto dos Acores
A blend of the 3 'noble' varieties of the island, the Rola Pipa was aged in a slightly different way to what would be traditional, with no oak. It was aged on lees for 10 months, in stainless steel tanks. This is to develope the minerality of the wine, but also to add weight, texture, and complexity. Remaining in stainless steel helps to preserve the vibrancy of flavours, balancing crispness, and natural salinity.
The name Rola Pipa comes from the name of channels that were excavated out of the ground - hard volcanic lava - to create a ramp from the winery directly into the sea. Historically, to get wines to the port, on neighbouring island of Faial, for long-haul journeys, the barrels would be rolled down the ramp and into the sea. From here they were picked out of the water and on to barges, where they could be taken to the port.
A wonderful wine to pair with and salad, fish, seafood, or even white meat dishes. It's a very versatile option!
