Grape Varieties Verdelho
An amazingly interesting wine!
Techincally fortified, but only mildly on top of what are already ripe grapes. It's made from vines right on the sea front and aged in old barrels in an oxidative style. That doesn't really do it justice though...
This wine has such a story behind it, and a real sense of history and place. The original style of wine to come from these islands, but now only produced in tiny amounts.
Vibrant, marmalade citrus and dried apricot, with nuttiness, caramel, minerality, and loads of salinity. Some flor, rancio, medicinal, and some savoury herb character. On the palate it has concentration of sweet fruit, impeccably balanced by great acidity and those savoury notes. The complexity is mesmerising, and the finish is so pure and long.
Very unusual, very traditional, very good!
