Everyone knows this region for great summer holidays, but this is also an up-and-coming wine region for Portugal. Realising the potential of the region, within which 4 DOCs can actually be found, producers are bucking the trend of replacing vineyards with golf courses, and are using traditional blending methods and modern winemaking to produce some super wines.

The sunshine, heat and general Mediterranean climate means that vintage variation is minimal, and proximity to the sea results in slightly lower general temperatures. Soils vary between sandstone, limestone, sandy clay and occasional schist. Portuguese varieties are often found blended with international ones, and as vineyards mature, acidity becomes key to elegance. Not just for holidays and Cliff Richard!
